Gospel musician, Mathias Mhere’s album launch held on Saturday at 7 Arts Theatre almost degenerated into a political gathering as Zanu PF political heavyweights took turns to chant party slogans while showering the Double Double hit maker with gifts in what appeared to be a calculated move to ride on Mhere’s popularity.

Mhere’s album launch which came barely a week after his performance at the 21st February Movement celebrations in Matopos was attended by Zanu PF Secretary for Youths Kudzanai Chipanga, Political Commissar, Savior Kasukuwere, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality, Annastacia Ndhlovu and Zimbabwe Tourism Authority Chief Executive Ofcer Karikoga Kaseke among other political heavyweights.

Chivi Rural District Council Chairperson and Zanu PF member, Killer Zivhu who was also in attendance bought Mhere’s new album for a whooping US$4000 with Kasukuwere promising the lanky musician a residential stand in Harare.

Chipanga could not be outdone, buying Mhere’s album for US$3,100 while Domboshava based prophet only identied as Rwanga bought the third copy for US$2000.

The event had its fair share of controversy as Zanu PF slogans dominated speeches by politicians including Kaseke who promised Mhere a one week all expenses trip with his family to Victoria Falls.

Mhere was, however unmoved, encouraging Zanu PF politicians to keep on supporting him.

“This album is going to change lives of so many because of the type of content I used.

“I want to acknowledge government officials for gracing my launch and I encourage them to keep on doing it to others,” said Mhere.

Gift Mahlupeka, Fungisai Zvakavapano Mashavave, Bethan Pasinawako and Laiton Ngolomi also attended Mhere’s album launch.

The 12 track album carries songs such as Nhamo yekuzvipa, Error, Nyasha ndini and the collaboration he did with the Joyous Choir member Mkhululi Bhebe.
