Members of Couples for Christ Zimbabwe convened at St Francis Xavier Braeside Parish on the 18th of June to celebrate the group’s 35th anniversary through a cleanup campaign and culture night.
Couples for Christ is a movement intended for the renewal and strengthening of Christian family life with members committing themselves to the Lord and to one another so that they may grow in maturity as men and women of God.
The movement began in Manila, Philippines in 1981 and it is present in 5 parishes in Zimbabwe, St Francis Xavier in Braeside, St Gerard’s Borrowdale in Borrowdale, Our Lady of the Wayside in Mount Pleasant, Holy Name in Mabelreign and St Peter Canisius in Malborough.
The celebrations were marked by a cleanup campaign where members cleaned and put up rubbish bins around Braeside Shopping Centre. Celebrations continued in the evening with a cultural dinner dance in which Zvido Zvevanhu Ensemble performed the Jerusarema cultural dance backed by the polished Magis Zimbabwe crew.
A poet, Blackpearl and some youths from the Braeside parish also performed at the event.
Since its establishment, it has grown into various sub ministries such as Kids for Christ, Singles for Christ and Handmaids for Christ whose members are drawn from widows, single mothers and divorcees. Servants of the Lord, another subgroup, also has single fathers, widowers and divorcees as members.
